Analytical Reading…of Song Lyrics
Permalink for this paragraph 0 I never drive anywhere without music playing on my radio. So, as I was driving tonight, I began to think about how I listen to music. I am a very musical person, so there are many aspects of a song that catch my attention and are significant to me–instrumentation, vocal quality, etc. However, the most important thing that stands out to me is the lyrics of a song.
Permalink for this paragraph 0 This really got me thinking. I spend a huge amount of time analyzing song lyrics, some of which probably mean nothing other than exactly what they are saying. But that’s just who I am. I love to analyze and break down the words in a song in order to somehow relate to the songwriter.
Permalink for this paragraph 2 This is a skill which I really would like to transfer to my reading. For some reason, I struggle with being analytical while I’m reading. I have to constantly remind myself to look for symbols and delve into the deeper meanings in every poem, short story, or novel that I read. Maybe I should start singing everything that I read and it will start making more sense…
I know what you are talking about. I like to read books outside of class, but I never analyze or think about them as much as I do with class books, but I also enjoy them much more than books that I am required to read. It seems to me that sometimes I try too hard to analyze, and other times not nearly enough I wish that I could get meaning as well as enjoyment out of all of the books i read rather than separating them in my head the way I tend to do now.
I agree as well. Maybe we, as students dutifully doing what we’re told, spend so much time looking for something to analyze we miss out on the fun of the piece? Then again, what would it be like if we read the piece of work before the class even started? We, as students, would be able to draw our own conclusions and pick up on different themes. Without our critical eye, however, we’ll probably be missing out on some key aspects. It would be cool if these two things happened simultaneously. Also much more time efficient.
