Discovering Ethical Criticism Through Fairytales
Permalink for this paragraph 0 I really enjoyed Emily’s peer-led class on ethical criticism today. Exploring ethical criticism through fairytales was an interesting twist because when I think about fairytales, ethics is definitely not the first thing I think of. However, after reading the article and having discussion in class today, I was able to see where ethical criticism falls into fairytales.
Permalink for this paragraph 0 I have to admit that writing our own fairytales was my favorite part of the class, not only because it was fun, but also because it helped me really consider the role ethics play in fairytales. In creating our own storyline, we were able to explore what is ethical and what is unethical. I think my group was able to get a better grasp on this type of criticism through the writing activity than we were through a discussion of the article itself, and I for one learned a lot from it.
I’m so glad you benefited from the writing exercise! Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in analyzing texts and strictly seeing them from a critic’s view. I wanted to mix things up and see what it was like thinking about ethical criticism while writing something and whether that helped the class understand the criticism.
